I read The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down in 2004 and it had a profound effect on me. Lia Lee, a little Hmong girl with epilepsy, was the subject of the book by Anne Fadiman about the cultural divide that existed between the girl's family and the physicians who were trying to treat her. Lia Lee passed away in August after living most of her life in a vegetative state.
