Philip Levine died yesterday at eighty-seven. The U.S. Poet Laureate from 2011-2012, he composed poems that were, as Margalit Fox writes in The New York Times, “vibrantly, angrily, and often painfully alive with the sound, smell, and sinew of heavy manual labor.”
