An Excerpt from Walt Whitman's 'The Sleepers,' Illustrated

In his poem “The Sleepers” Whitman has a vision of himself walking among the sleeping multitudes, their slumber a great democratizer. He watches unrequited lovers, dying soldiers, scheming capitalists, homosexuals, babies, runaways, masturbators, murderers, and the murdered. Everyone sleeps, and everyone is loved.
