The art of fore-edge paintings

The Boston Public Library has made available online more than 200 high-resolution photographs of its collection of fore-edge paintings.  Painting the outer page surface of a closed book was a popular trend in the 17th century and continued into the early 18th century but dropped off as the century came to a close.
