The Brautigan Library at the Clark County Historical Museum in Vancouver, Washington was inspired by Richard Brautigan’s 1971 novel,
The Abortion: An Historical Romance 1966, which describes a library for “the undesirable, lyrical and haunted volumes of American writing.” Authors could put their manuscripts anywhere on the library shelves, happy to keep them there even if no reader could find them. The library offers unique and interesting stories from aspiring writers, each waiting to be read, and enjoyed. It features three collections of unpublished manuscripts and literary artifacts, Original, Digital, and Special.
The library hosts National Unpublished Writers’ Day annually on the last Sunday in January, around the time of Brautigan’s birthday.
