Prophet Song is a dystopian fiction by Paul Lynch that won the Man Booker Prize in 2023. In the near future, a far-right party seizes control of the Republic of Ireland, putting into place emergency powers that suspend the Irish constitution, giving the Garda Síochána far-reaching powers and establishing a new secret police force. Through the story of one family Lynch shows how easily a country can slip into totalitarianism. It was written several years ago but describes what is happening in the US today with the persecution inflicted on refugees. It also brings to mind the disappeared during Argentina’s “Dirty War” of 1976 to 1983. It is a riveting and disquieting read in times like these.
